Charlotte claimed a 6-1 win to hand Wake Forest its first Tuesday loss in more than two calendar years.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Charlotte snapped No. 17 Wake Forest's string of midweek success, beating the Demon Deacons, 6-1, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Wake Forest (28-11) had won 21 straight Tuesday games dating back more than two years since the last loss to Coastal Carolina in March 2015. The loss also snaps a 13-game midweek winning streak since falling to UNCG more than a year ago.
The 49ers (21-16) took advantage of strong pitching and timely hitting. Charlotte was 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position compared to 1-for-9 for Wake Forest, and scored four two-out runs to earn the win.
For Wake Forest, Stuart Fairchild and Bruce Steel combined for four of the seven hits. Morgan McSweeney and Carter Bach had scoreless outings in relief.
In the second, Jackson Mims hit the first of three doubles and scored on a Logan Sherer RBI single. Sherer came around to score on a sac fly to make it 2-0.
Wake Forest's first of two multi-hit innings came in the second when Steel singled to left and Nick DiPonzio dropped down a bunt single with two outs, but a popout ended the threat.
The Deacs' five-game errorless streak came to an end to start the fifth and the error came back to haunt them. With two outs, Todd Elwood doubled and Hunter Jones singled to plate a pair of unearned runs and push the margin to 4-0.
Wake Forest got on the board in the fifth. Steel dropped down a bunt single and after a fielder's choice and wild pitch, Logan Harvey scored on a Jonathan Pryor RBI single. Pryor was tagged out after oversliding second to end the inning.
After two quick outs in the top of the seventh, Brett Netzer Walked and T.J. Nichting singled to set up a two-run double by Mims to cap off the scoring.
Matt Brooks (5-3) earned the win for Charlotte with 3.0 scoreless frames, while Colin Peluse (2-1) took the loss. Out of the pen, Matt Horkey, Colby Bruce, J.D. Prochaska and Jonah Patten allowed just one run over 6.0 innings for Charlotte.
