Deacons take down Davidson

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest's offense stayed hot, and the Deacs received contributions from several freshmen pitchers in a 13-5 win over Davidson at David F. Couch Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The Demon Deacon (5-4) bats started the game 15-for-25 over the first four innings as Wake Forest jumped out to a 13-2 lead.

Keegan Maronpot led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-3 with his first-career grand slam, totaling five RBIs and three runs scored in the game.

Jonathan Pryor, Jake Mueller, Gavin Sheets, Ben Breazeale and Patrick Frick added two hits each.

On the mound, freshmen pitched the first 6.0 innings as Wake Forest broke the game open.

Colin Peluse started in his collegiate debut and allowed just two unearned runs on one hit, also striking out a pair.

Morgan McSweeney (1-1) earned the win in relief by tossing 2.1 shutout frames, striking out five.

Carter Bach allowed just one solo home run in 2.0 innings, striking out three.

Sophomores Rayne Supple and Griffin Roberts also threw scoreless innings out of the pen in the victory.

After scoring their first run on an error, the Demon Deacons took a 3-0 first-inning lead on a Sheets two-run single.

Davidson (5-3) scored two in the top of the second to make it a 3-2 game, but Wake Forest scored the next 10 runs to take control.

Jake Mueller roped his first-career double in the second inning to make the score 4-2, then Maronpot, Logan Harvey and Frick tallied RBI singles in the third to push the advantage to 7-2.

Following five-straight one-out singles, including a two-run knock by Breazeale, Maronpot smashed his first homer of the season to bring home four and make it 13-2.

The Wildcats were led by Eric Jones, who had a pair of home runs. Josh Hudson, Dan Spear, ZJ Zabinski and Jaret LaCagnina held Wake Forest scoreless the final four innings.

KNOCKING 'EM IN
• The reigning ACC and National Player of the Week Gavin Sheets delivered a two-run single in the first inning.
• He led the nation with 18 RBIs entering the game, and increased his total to 20 with that hit. He finished the game 2-for-3.

SITTING 'EM DOWN
• After entering the game sixth in the ACC and 80th nationally at 9.1 strikeouts per nine inning, Wake Forest fanned 12 Wildcats in 9.0 innings of work.
Colin Peluse fanned two, Morgan McSweeney struck out five, Carter Bach added three and Griffin Roberts wiped out a pair.

OFFENSIVE TURNAROUND
• Following the season-opening trip to Houston, the Deacs were hitting just .194 as a team and had only three players hitting better than .215.
• In the five games since, Wake Forest is hitting .394 as a team, with 30 extra-base hits. Six regulars are hitting .350 or better in that span, and eight are above .310, as the Deacs have averaged 14.0 runs per game.
• That surge has increased the team average to .314. Now, every starter is hitting better than .240, with seven hitting above .285.

• Wake Forest wraps up its nine-game homestand this weekend, welcoming Quinnipiac, Kent State and Radford to town.
