Wake Forest will face Virginia in a rematch of last year’s title match, won by the Demon Deacons, 4-3.
ROME, GA. - The Wake Forest men’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the ACC Men’s Tennis Championships Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 sweep of Georgia Tech at the Rome Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons (27-1) advance to their second consecutive ACC title match and will square off against last year’s opponent, Virginia, once again. A year ago, Wake Forest, then the No. 2 seed, defeated Virginia 4-3 to capture the first ACC title in program history. This year, the seeds are reversed as the Deacs head into the match as the No. 1 seed while the Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed.
Wake Forest stormed out of the gate in doubles play against the Yellow Jackets (17-7), opening 3-0 leads on all three courts to begin doubles play. Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim continued their dominance, as the No. 1 doubles team in the country picked up a 6-1 decision at the No. 1 spot over the No. 38 duo of Eubanks and Benito. Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky sealed the deal as the duo claimed a 6-3 victory in the third slot.
Wake Forest maintained its play through singles, winning the first set on five of six courts. Borna Gojo picked up his first win of the tournament after seeing all his matches go unfinished, as the freshman cruised on the No. 2 singles court to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 89 Andrew Li.
Seraphim improved to 4-0 at the Championships as he put the Deacs within a point of victory with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles. One court over in the sixth slot, Alan Gadjiev served the Deacs into the championship match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Chrysochos was in the middle of a tiebreaker in the second set when the match was clinched. The sophomore saw his match go unfinished with three match points in hand as he was up 6-3 in the tiebreaker.
Mansouri battled back from a defeat in the first set to even things up with a 6-3 decision in the second set when play was halted. Uspensky jumped out to an early lead with a 7-5 victory in the opening set and was down a break in the second set, 3-5, as Gadjiev clinched the match.
First serve for Sunday’s championship match is slated for 10 a.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
