Wake Forest finished its spring season with a 4-1-1 overall record, including two wins over ACC foes.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's soccer team capped off an impressive spring with a 5-0 victory over ACC foe Virginia over the weekend.
The Demon Deacons also held a trio of community service events, hosting more than 160 youth soccer players for the annual spring soccer clinic on Friday, then delivered meals to the community via H.O.P.E. (Help Our People Eat), and joined the women's soccer team in leading another soccer clinic with the local international community on Sunday afternoon.
Taking on the NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Cavaliers on Saturday, Jon Bakero led the Deacs with a first-half hat trick as Wake Forest cruised to its second-straight 5-0 win to close the spring season.
Eight minutes into the game, Michael DeShields dribbled to 20 yards out, sending a through ball to Steven Echevarria who delivered a far-post service to Bakero for the finish, tallying his first of three goals.
Seven minutes later Luis Argudo put the Deacons ahead 2-0 from an individual effort by Ema Twumasi to roll a pass behind him, as Argudo was able to pick up the ball, cut a defender and place a curling shot by UVA's keeper to the back post.
Bakero struck again in the 22nd minute with a right-footed shot from just inside the 18 yard box. Logan Gdula attempted to split the back line with a through ball, but a defender deflected it right to Bakero who pushed the lead to 3-0.
In the 27th minute, Bakero completed his hat trick courtesy of another DeShields assist. After executing a run behind the defense, an even better ball played by DeShields put Bakero in on a one-on-one for the finish and a 4-0 halftime lead.
The fifth and final goal came in the 83rd minute. On a free kick from 30 yards, Argudo chipped the ball behind to Twumasi who was alone on goal and blasted a left-footed shot into the near post upper-corner.
Goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet stopped all three shots on goal to record the shutout for the Deacs.
"It was important that the team end on a strong performance regardless of the score line," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "There has been so much talk about what this team will look like after the departure of an experienced and talented senior class. I'm proud of the underclassmen who put in the work all fall and excelled when given a chance to play this spring. We're already eager to get back on the pitch in the fall to defend our ACC title."
