North Carolina edged Wake Forest with a run in the bottom of the 15th inning to beat the Deacs, 3-2.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Wake Forest played its longest game since 2007, but came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision against No. 29 North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium on Friday night in 15 innings.
The Demon Deacons (11-15, 5-5 ACC) hadn't played a 15+ inning game since a 17-inning contest at Boston College in 2007. The game also tied for the longest game ever between the Deacs and Tar Heels (16-10, 6-4 ACC), matching a 15-inning game in 1936.
Rayne Supple was stellar in relief and Griffin Roberts recorded another strong start for Wake Forest.
Supple entered in the eighth inning and tossed a career-long 6.0 shutout frames in relief, allowing two hits and striking out four without issuing a walk as he held UNC scoreless through the 13th.
Tyler Witt entered in the 14th and struck out the side before running into trouble in the 15th. A two-base error started the inning and a hit-by-pitch followed. After a flyout, Brandon Riley delivered a walk-off single up the middle.
That was the first run scored for either side since the fourth. Following a Riley RBI single which gave UNC a first-inning lead, the Deacs scored twice in the top of the fourth on a Johnny Aiello double, Bobby Seymour single and RBI groundouts from Shane Muntz and Michael Ludowig.
Ashton McGee tied it at 2-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to set up a stalemate for the next 10 innings.
Roberts struck out 10+ batters for the fifth time this season, fanning 10 in 7.0 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks.
For UNC, Tyler Baum allowed two unearned runs in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts. Brett Daniels threw 1.1 innings and closer Josh Hiatt followed with 5.2 shutout frames, striking out eight. Cooper Criswell (1-2) earned the win by striking out a pair in the top of the 15th.
Offensively, Aiello tallied two doubles and a walk and Seymour went 2-for-6. Patrick Frick was 1-for-4 with three walks.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
