WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest baseball team dropped a 15-9 slugfest to Southern California on Saturday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark.
Though each team had 10 hits, the Demon Deacons (3-4) committed two errors which led to six unearned runs, walked 10 batters and hit two more as the Trojans (5-1) evened the series at a game apiece.
Both teams hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run blast by Ben Breazeale which tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning.
But after USC plated a pair of unearned runs after an error, Adalberto Carrillo added the exclamation point with a grand slam to make the score 12-6.
Johnny Aiello hit his third homer of the sesaon and Keegan Maronpot scored on a wild pitch to cut the margin to 12-8.
USC added three more runs in the eighth on a pair of run-scoring balks and a Corey Dempster RBI double to push the advantage to 15-8, before a Gavin Sheets RBI single closed out the scoring in the bottom of the inning.
Sheets led the Deacons offensively with a 3-for-5 effort, while Aiello also had a pair of hits. Maronpot added an early three-run double, as well.
Wake Forest pitchers struck out 10 Trojans, including two by Carter Bach in a perfect inning of relief and another by Rhyse Dee in his collegiate debut.
For Southern Cal, Lars Nootbaar finished 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three runs scored, while Dempster, Frankie Rios and Carrillo notched two hits apiece. Quentin Longrie earned the win in relief for the Trojans.
The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
