I met my nephew who is in town for a pharmacy conference in Charlotte last night and was following the game on Twitter. I literally couldn't believe the final tweet sent, that described the terrible way the Deacs lost this one. Games 2 and 3 of this series have now been moved to Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.
This is from Wake Media Relations:
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- With Wake Forest leading 5-4 after a 33-minute rain delay with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Demon Deacons committed an error which allowed two runs to score in a 6-5 loss to Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday night.
The rain started in the middle of the ninth inning, as Donnie Sellers took the mound. Connor Stutts drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner Torii Hunter Jr. advanced to third on a Cavan Biggio single, but Biggio was thrown out trying to advance to second. Then, Nick Podkul lined out and Zak Kutsulis was intentionally walked and stole second, as the rain delay was called with a 1-1 count to Matt Vierling.
After the delay, Vierling grounded the first pitch to shortstop, and with the turf still wet, the throw to first skipped away and allowed two runners to score as the Fighting Irish (14-10, 5-5 ACC) walked off to win their sixth straight game.
Wake Forest (17-11, 4-6 ACC) was led offensively by Will Craig, who had an RBI double and sacrifice fly, while Nate Mondou recorded two hits and two runs scored, and Ben Breazeale added two hits and an RBI.
Parker Dunshee pitched 8.0 full innings and struck out six, but allowed three solo homers, including to Biggio and Jake Shepski in the seventh and eighth innings as Notre Dame cut a 5-2 lead to 5-4 heading into the ninth.
Brandon Bielak (2-1) earned the win with 4.0 innings of one-run ball in relief, striking out four.
The Deacs opened the scoring with a trio of first-inning runs. A Breazeale sac fly, throwing error and Stuart Fairchild RBI double brought home Jonathan Pryor, Mondou and Will Craig.
Lane Richards and Ricky Sanchez opened the fourth with back-to-back doubles to make the score 3-1.
Joey Rodriguez led off the fifth with a double. After he advanced to third on a groundout, the Irish attempted to intentionally walk Craig, who swung at the first pitch and hit it to the warning track to bring home Rodriguez and make the score 4-1.
Richards homered in the bottom of the inning to cut the margin to 4-2, and Craig knocked in Mondou on a double to center field in the seventh to push the lead back to 5-2 before the Irish ended the game with four straight runs.
With a wintry mix and cold temperatures in the forecast for Saturday, the teams will now play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
