Wake Forest makes second consecutive appearance in NCAA Tournament and will face Texas in the opening round
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women’s tennis team was selected to participate in the its second consecutive NCAA Tournament, as the tournament field was announced Tuesday evening. The Demon Deacons earned the No. 3 seed in the Columbia Regional and will face No. 2 Texas in the opening round.
The regional will take place May 12-14, with official dates and start times still to be determined. South Carolina, the regional’s No. 1 seed and the No. 14 seed overall in the tournament field, will serve as the regional host and will face No. 4 North Florida in its first-round match.
The Deacs, ranked 34th in the latest ITA rankings, enter the NCAA Tournament with an 18-10 record overall and are coming off an ACC quarterfinal appearance. Wake Forest finished the league schedule tied for fifth with a 7-7 record, the team’s highest ACC finish since a third-place finish in 2002. As the No. 6 seed at the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship, the Deacs defeated Louisville in second-round action before falling to Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.
Wake Forest’s opponent in the first round will be Texas, who enters the tournament with a 13-8 record on the season. Ranked 24th in the ITA polls, the Longhorns were the No. 4 seed in last week’s Big 12 Tennis Championship, ultimately falling to top-seeded, and eventual champion, Texas Tech in the semifinals.
South Carolina is the tournament’s No. 14 overall seed behind an 18-8 record and an appearance in the SEC Championship semifinals, losing to eventual champion Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks are also ranked 14th in the country and will be hosting a regional for the second consecutive season.
North Florida earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament as champions of the ASUN Tournament, upsetting top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast in the title match. The Ospreys claimed their sixth conference title in program history, and third in as many years, with the victory and head to Columbia with a 15-8 record on the year.
The winner of the Columbia Regional will be one of 16 teams to advance to Athens, Georgia, for the remainder of the NCAA Team Championships, held May 19-23 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
