WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest took advantage of 16 strikeouts on the mound and a pair of big home runs in a 7-2 season-opening win over Georgetown at David F. Couch Ballpark on Feb. 16.
Griffin Roberts recorded career-highs of nine strikeouts and 6.0 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk as he recorded the win.
Rayne Supple earned his first save since 2016, striking out seven over 3.0 hitless innings, allowing one walk.
Patrick Frick hit what proved to be the game-winning home run in the sixth inning, blasting a three-run shot to break a 2-2 tie. Johnny Aielloadded an RBI single and Jake Muellerscored another run on an error to cap off the scoring for the Deacs.
Wake Forest plated the first two runs of the game on a Chris Lanzillisacrifice fly and Nick DiPonzio solo homer.
The Hoyas (0-1) rallied with two outs in the sixth, with Ryan M. Davis singling up the middle just past the gloves of Roberts and Frick, and Sammy Stevens hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2 before Frick's homer in the bottom of the inning.
Mueller finished 2-for-4 with a double, walk and three stolen bases while DiPonzio went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
FRESHMAN FACES
• Six freshmen made their Wake Forest debuts on Friday: Chris Lanzilli, Michael Ludowig, Cole McNamee, Shane Muntz, DJ Poteetand Bobby Seymour.
• Lanzilli hit a sac fly and walked. Ludowig had a pinch-hit appearance and McNamee was a defensive replacement. Muntz went 1-for-3 while Poteet drew a walk, and Seymour walked and scored a run.
K/BB Ratio
• Wake Forest pitchers struck out 16 Hoyas while walking only two. The last time the Deacs had at least 15 strikeouts with two walks or less was in a 12-inning win over Davidson in 2014 (17 strikeouts/two walks).
• On the flip side, seven different Deacon hitters drew walks while striking out six times.
SWIPING BAGS
• Wake Forest stole five bases in a game for the first time since a 2016 victory over Saint Peter's.
• Jake Mueller stole three bases, while Nick DiPonzio and Johnny Aiello each stole one.
