Borna Gojo’s upset victory over the fourth-seeded player highlighted play in the Round of 64 for Wake Forest
ATHENS, GA. – Freshman Borna Gojo’s upset victory in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship highlighted a perfect day for the Demon Deacons, as all three players in the singles field, Gojo, Petros Chrysochos and Skander Mansouri, advanced to the Round of 32.
Making his NCAA Singles Championship debut, Gojo drew Texas A&M’s Arthur Rinderknech, the sixth-ranked singles player who is seeded fourth in the tournament. After quickly dropping the opening set, 6-2, Gojo responded and battled to a 4-all in the second set. He then held serve to go up 5-4 before breaking Rinderknech in the final service game to push his match into a decisive third set.
In the final set, Gojo once again broke his opponent to go up 3-1 and served out the remaining games to clinch the 6-3 decision. Wednesday’s win marks the highest-ranked opponent that Gojo has ever defeated, topping his previous best victory over Emil Reinberg of Georgia, who was ranked 46th at the time. Gojo will now face Reinberg’s teammate in Nathan Ponwith in the Round of 32.
Chrysochos, the fifth-ranked player in the country and the No. 3 seed in the singles field broke Tyler Lu of Yale in the opening game of the first set, propelling him to a 6-4 victory. An early break in the second set was all Chrysochos needed to close out his match with a 6-3 decision in the second set. Chrysochos will now face Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern in the next round.
Mansouri, a No. 9-16 seed in this year’s draw, earned one break in each set to complete the 3-for-3 day for the Demon Deacons. Facing Jose Salazar of Arkansas, Mansouri broke to go up 5-4 in the opening set before serving out to a 6-4 decision. He then broke Salazar to once again go up 5-4 in the second set, and closed out the match on the next service game. Mansouri will face either David Biosca of East Tennessee State or Collin Altamirano of Virginia in the next round. During the regular season, Mansouri and Altamirano faced off on March 31, with Mansouri prevailing 6-4, 6-4.
In addition to all three Round of 32 singles matches being played on Thursday, the doubles competition will get underway, as Mansouri and Christian Seraphim, the No. 4 seed in the draw will face twin brother Hunter and Yates Johnson of Southern Methodist in the opening round.
