WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Freshman Giovanna DeMarco scored a golden goal with just 19 seconds left in overtime as Wake Forest beat Ohio State, 1-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Soccer Championship at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
At the 99:41 mark, Ryanne Brown slipped a pass in between two defenders to an open DeMarco, who delivered a clinical shot just inside the far-post to send the Demon Deacons (9-8-1) into the second round. The Buckeyes conclude their season with a 9-6-4 record.
Wake Forest will play the winner of No. 2 seed West Virginia and Radford on Nov. 16 at a location to be determined. Those two teams play on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Deacs reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for a second-straight season after edging Georgetown in penalties in the opening round last year.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Deacs controlled play the rest of the way. Wake Forest had an 11-4 advantage in shots in the second half and overtime, finishing with an 18-9 lead in shots overall.
Bayley Feist and Peyton Perea combined for half of Wake Forest's 18 shots, while DeMarco needed just one to find the back of the net.
Nonie Frishette made two saves to record her sixth shutout of the season. Devon Kerr made four saves in the loss for Ohio State.
