Wake Forest will open tournament play on Friday, May 12 against UNCW
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the Wake Forest men’s tennis team has earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament as the tournament field was announced Tuesday evening. The Demon Deacons will host a regional for the third consecutive season and will open the tournament against UNC Wilmington on Friday, May 12 at 5 p.m.
Kentucky earned the No. 2 seed in the Winston-Salem regional and will face No. 3 seed Georgia State in the other opening round match at 2 p.m. The two winners will meet on Saturday, May 13, at 5 p.m., with all matches being held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Demon Deacons earned the top seed in the tournament behind a 27-2 record and the program’s first-ever ACC regular season title. Wake Forest took a 19-match winning streak into the ACC Men’s Tennis Championship final against Virginia, where they ultimately lost in a match that went to the wire, 4-3.
The Seahawks of UNCW earned an automatic berth into the tournament field as winners of the CAA Championship. The top seed in the conference tournament, UNCW defeated Delaware, College of Charleston and William & Mary en route to the program’s fifth conference title.
Kentucky earned an at-large bid into the tournament with a 14-12 overall record. The Wildcats, who were the No. 8 seed in the SEC Tennis Championships, fell to No. 9 Tennessee in their first match of the conference tournament, 4-2. Kentucky entered the conference tournament ranked No. 27 in the most recent ITA team rankings.
Georgia State, ranked 36th in the ITA rankings, won the Sun Belt Championship as the top seed with a 4-3 victory over No. 2 South Alabama in the championship match. The team is 19-6 overall and riding an 11-match winning streak into the tournament, tied for the second-longest winning streak in program history.
The winner of the Winston-Salem Regional will be one of 16 teams to advance to Athens, Georgia, for the remainder of the NCAA Team Championships, held May 18-23 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
