ELON, N.C. -- Wake Forest scored in each of the first four innings en route to an 8-5 win over Elon at Latham Park on Wednesday night.
Jake Mueller went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and Johnny Aiello was 3-for-5 with a stolen base and RBI to lead the Demon Deacon (21-26) offense, which racked up 14 hits in the game. DJ Poteet came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a double.
The win snapped a hot streak for the Phoenix (27-18), who entered the game having won 11 of its last 12 games.
Bobby Seymour had an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning to put the Deacs on the board, but the Phoenix tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout.
The Deacs plated the next six runs to pull away. Christian Long, making his first start in almost a month, hit an RBI single in the second inning to make the score 2-1.
Wake Forest tallied four runs in the third inning. Mueller singled and came around to score on a wild pitch, then Shane Muntz added a two-run single and Chris Lanzilli added an RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.
Seymour added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to extend the advantage to 7-1.
Elon scored three times in the fifth, including a two-run homer by Hayden Platt, to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Aiello closed out the scoring for the Deacs with a sixth-inning RBI single and Elon hit another sac fly in the bottom of the inning.
Chris Farish (1-0) earned the win by recording the final out of the fifth inning. Morgan McSweeney, William Fleming and Rayne Supple each recorded scoreless innings in relief, with Supple tallying his eighth save of the season.
Tyler Witt started and conceded four runs (three earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings. Mason Daniels (1-2) took the loss for Elon, starting and allowing two runs in 2.0 innings.
Wake Forest is off this weekend as the student-athletes take final exams. The Deacs play next on Tuesday against Radford at 6 p.m.
