WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest committed three ninth-inning errors, as Georgia Tech scored three ninth-inning runs to tie the game and won it with an 11th-inning homer, 7-6, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons (16-7, 4-3 ACC) led 6-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Georgia Tech's (13-7, 3-4 ACC) Trevor Craport was down to his final strike before singling to left field, and Joey Bart walked to bring the tying run to the plate.
On an 0-1 pitch, the Deacs dropped a foul ball to allow the game to continue. The next pitch was dribbled on the infield and thrown into right field, where it was then booted for a second error on the play to allow each runner to advance and make the score 6-5.
The next delivery was a wild pitch to the backstop, allowing Coleman Poje to score the tying run. Ryan Peurifoy then hit what proved to be the game-winning homer in the top of the 11th.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Jonathan Pryor had an RBI to give the Deacs a 4-3 lead, and Logan Harveydelivered a two-run homer in the eighth to push the margin to 6-3 before the ninth-inning collapse.
Parker Dunshee matched his career-high in strikeouts for the second-straight game, fanning 12 Yellow Jackets in 6.0 innings. Griffin Roberts fanned four in 3.0 innings in relief, while John McCarren (2-2) took the loss after throwing the final 2.0 frames.
Zac Ryan (3-1) settled the game down for Georgia Tech in the late innings. He entered after the Yellow Jackets tied it and struck out six Deacs over the next 3.0 innings on just one hit. Offensively, Poje led Tech with a 4-for-5 effort, including solo homers in the second and fourth innings.
Pryor, Jake Mueller, Gavin Sheets and Johnny Aiello had two hits each for the Deacs.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
