Today there was a Zoom meeting run by ACC Senior Associate Commissioner Paul Brazeau and Assistant Commissioner Lee Butler and the Director of Basketball Operations for each of the 15 conference programs. Because things are changing almost hourly, they stressed that this information is accurate as of 10:02 a.m. today.

Among the things discussed that fans will notice this season are:

  • Plexiglas barrier between the teams and spectator area
  • No TV camera operator within 15 feet of the bench. No TV camera on the baseline operated by a human being. Replay angles will probably be affected by this.
  • More games where the TV talent is remote.
  • Unity statement either on the video board or PA Announcer. Then National Anthem
  • Schools can produce its own unity video but a conference video will be provided.
  • Pre-game handshakes and fist bumps with game officials are prohibited as are post game handshakes with opponents.
  • Artificial noise is permitted for this season. 85 dB max, volume must remain the same while the ball is live.
  • Referees will wear whistle covers like the NBA referees did. Some games might only have two referees for a game.

Each team will receive a Kinexon SafeZone device. This is a mobile tracking device worn as a wristband. It tracks how close you are to someone, who is also wearing the device, and for how long. It is designed to help maintain proper social distancing by beeping/vibrating when someone is in close proximity longer than a preset amount of time.

According to a report, the devices are costing each school $16k. The devices are being shipped from Germany so between the holidays, customs etc., teams won't have them for a few days.

The device won't be worn during games but players and coaching staffs are expected to wear these at other times to help with social distancing.

The Kinexon SafeZone device isn't something fans will particularly notice but it is some cool technology that I thought I would share.
