High Point scored four first-inning runs en route to a 5-3 victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A big first inning came back to haunt No. 16 Wake Forest in a 5-3 loss to High Point on Tuesday afternoon.
The Panthers (26-18) plated four runs in the opening frame, which proved to be enough for the victory.
High Point went 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position, while the Demon Deacons (32-15) went just 3-for-21 with runners on and 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
After giving up four runs in the first, Drew Loepprich settled in and held High Point hitless over the next four before a solo homer by Hunter Lee in the sixth. In relief, Colin Peluse tossed 3.0 perfect innings, striking out four without allowing a baserunner.
In the first, High Point got a bloop single, walk, and bloop double to get on the board. Then, Carson Jackson snuck a double down the third base line to bring home a pair, and after a passed ball, an unearned run scored on a Lee single.
The Deacs got on the board in the third. Logan Harvey walked and Jonathan Pryor singled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games, setting up for a Jake Mueller RBI groundout.
Gavin Sheets and Johnny Aiello singled to start the fourth, and Sheets came home on a Keegan Maronpot sacrifice fly to cut the margin to 4-2.
After Lee's solo homer, Bruce Steel hit an RBI double to left-center to make the score 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
Wake Forest had baserunners in each of the final three innings, but was unable to get a runner past first.
Aiello and Harvey recorded two hits apiece for the Deacs, while Sheets went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Cooper Jeffers (1-2) started on a staff day for High Point and earned the win with 2.0 scoreless frames. Kevin Bell earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The loss was just the second in a midweek game this season for the Demon Deacons, who move to 10-2 during the week.
Wake Forest travels to Radford on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
