Sorry this is so late today. The drive back yesterday (and potentially even the drive to Kentucky Sat night/Sun morning) has wiped me out.
- Good news for the Deacs, as true freshman quarterback Jamie Newman is not just back on the field, but he's also participating once again.
- As I walked off the field after talking to coach Clawson today, he asked me if I was impressed with the "336 Connection" as Newman completed at least a pair of passes to fellow true freshman from the local area, Jeremiah Brown.
- Tyler Bell was in a yellow jersey today, as he was victim of a "stinger" during the scrimmage. I didn't get official word that this was the case, but perhaps that's what limited his reps that day. Steve Shutt, Wake football SID, also said often they use these scrimmage to get more looks for the more "unknown" players, and they have nearly a whole season worth of reps from Tyler Bell last year, whereas the staff really hadn't yet seen Carney and Rocky Reid in game-like situations.
- Generally speaking, the tone of the practice seemed more low-key and quiet than other days. It's something that can happen after the 1st scrimmage of the camp, and we got some comments from Clawson on this.
- Scotty Washington was a slow starter today, with a couple early drops, but then a pair of really nice catches in the end zone on fade routes, including one he wrestled away from Brad Watson 1-on-1.
- Kyle Kearns had one of his best outings of the spring so far, sometimes completing passes on all potential reps during a session. He threw a nice 15-20 yard ball in traffic that was zipped to just the right spot caught by Alex Bachman, and found Steven Claude on the sidelines later on.
- Saw Cade Carney make a little juke move at the line of scrimmage to break open for a 15-yard run today. I'm guessing he may be able to do more than just run people over.
- Kendall Hinton and John Wolford threw picks on back-to-back plays. Hinton threw one too hard and behind Rocky Reid about 2-yards downfield that bounced off his hands right into a waiting Zack Wary, who ran it all the way back unmolested. Wolford inadvertently found Marquel Lee on the very next play.
