The ACC selected 52 student-athletes for the 2018 Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarship
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Demon Deacons have been selected as 2018 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Award recipients, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Wednesday, Feb. 28. Christian Seraphim of men’s tennis, Kevin Politz of men’s soccer and Maddie Huster of women’s soccer received the award while Cam Serigne of football was named an honorary recipient.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate studies. Each recipient receives $5,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have excelled in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Serigne was one of nine student-athletes given the Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award, given to student-athletes who are pursuing a professional career in their chosen sport.
A Munich, Germany native majoring in business and enterprise management, Seraphim was a part of the first-ever ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship team. He helped the Demon Deacons earn their first-ever ACC regular season title, No. 1 national ranking and No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament last season. He has been named to the All-ACC Academic Team twice, the All-ACC team once and as earned doubles All-American honors twice in his career.
A four-year starter and mathematical business major, Politz was honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as the Men’s Soccer Academic All-America of the Year as well as First Team Academic All-American. The Morganville, New Jersey native was also named a United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-American and a Senior CLASS Award Candidate. After his senior year, Politz earned the status ACC Defensive Player of the Year while also receiving United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American and Second Team All-ACC honors. Politz was most recently a New York Red Bulls Homegrown signee. Off the pitch, Politz was a dedicated volunteer for Help Our People Eat (H.O.P.E.), while participating in Habitat for Humanity, Discovering Education through Student Knowledge (D.E.S.K.) and the 3-2-1 Deacon Dash for Down Syndrome program.
A two-year team captain and four-year starter, Huster was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Team and Second Team All-ACC honors to cap her senior season. A three-time All-ACC Academic Team member, the health and exercise science major from Cincinnati, Ohio, Huster started all 21 games her senior season, finishing with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She was drafted in the 2018 NWSL Draft by the Washington Spirit and earned an invitation to the U-23 National Team Camp in Nov. 2017. Outside of soccer, Huster volunteered with numerous organizations, including the Campus Kitchen, D.E.S.K. and H.O.P.E., while volunteering with multiple soccer camps.
An Ashburn, Virginia native, Serigne is the most prolific tight end in ACC history, setting school and conference marks for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches by a tight end. In 12 games during the 2017 season, he recorded 35 catches for 444 yards and eight touchdowns. Off the field, the finance major served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years at Wake Forest. He led his team in campus and community events, including Habitat for Humanity projects and Hit the Bricks Brian Piccolo Cancer Foundation. Serigne also helped with the Career Development and Networking Night that encouraged student-athletes to seek out jobs and internships.
The student-athletes will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Luncheon presented by ESPN on April 11. The luncheon will be hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro.
