Men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s track and field and women’s tennis earned academic recognition
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four of Wake Forest’s athletic programs have been honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for the 2016-17 academic year. Men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s track and field and women’s tennis all received recognition for their 2016-17 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.
The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a multi-year rate based on the most recent four years of data and is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The awards are presented annually to teams finishing among the top 10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The 2016-17 academic year is the 13th year of the program.
The men’s cross country program earned the accolade for the fifth time, including it’s second-consecutive year. The team is one of eight in the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn the honor and one of five in the state of North Carolina.
The men’s golf team achieved the award for the fourth time and for the first time since 2009-10. The team is one of seven in both the conference and the state to earn an award.
Men’s track has earned the honor each year since the inception of a combined indoor and outdoor award in 2015. The team is one of four in the ACC to be awarded and only one of two in the state, joining Davidson.
Women’s tennis garnered recognition for the second-straight year and has been honored five times since the creation of the award. The program is one of 10 in the conference and one of eight in North Carolina to earn the honor.
The Ivy League was the top-scoring conference in both number of teams and percentage of teams honored, with 108 (or 48.6 percent), followed by the Patriot League with 100 (47.2 percent). The Atlantic Coast Conference ranks third in total number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards with 96 teams.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 23. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
