Wake Forest ties a program record with its 15th consecutive win with a 6-1 victory over NC State Thursday afternoon
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wake Forest men’s tennis team tied a program record with its 15th consecutive win Thursday, as the top-ranked Demon Deacons cruised past NC State 6-1 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The 2017 Deacs, who haven’t lost since suffering their lone setback of the season on Feb. 19 against Ohio State, have matched the 1977 squad that opened the season 15-0 before finishing with a 17-2 record.
Wake Forest (23-1, 10-0 ACC), who put an end to its three-match losing streak to the Wolfpack (13-13, 4-7 ACC), opened play Thursday to an early advantage. NC State who entered play with a depleted roster due to injuries, was forced to default at both the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots.
The free win at the third doubles position wasn’t needed, however, as Wake Forest won on the top two courts to secure the doubles point. The No. 1 tandem of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim dropped two games en route to a 6-2 victory over the No. 53 duo of Alexis Galarneau and Nick Horton. Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev, playing at No. 2 doubles, took their match by a 6-1 margin.
Mansouri and Seraphim tied a school record with their 30th win this year as a duo, matching Steven Forman and Cory Parr for the most victories in a single season by a doubles team. The two are 17-5 this spring after posting a 13-1 record during the fall.
After the Deacs made it 2-0 with a default win at No. 6 singles, Wake Forest won four straight matches to push the advantage to 6-0. No. 69 Seraphim, playing in the No. 4 slot, make quick work of Ivan Saveljic with a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Dennis Uspensky followed at the No. 5 position with his ninth consecutive win, 6-2, 6-2 over Sean Burnette to clinch the match.
Third-ranked Petros Chrysochos earned his 20th win over a ranked opponent this season, defeating No. 76 Nick Horton in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Mansouri, ranked 15th nationally, continued the Deacs’ winning ways with a 7-5, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 slot.
In the final match of the afternoon, Gojo, ranked 45th nationally, rebounded from a 6-3 defeat in the first set to force third set with a 7-5 decision in the second set. The two would play a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner, with Gojo falling to No. 119 Galarneau in extra points, 12-10.
Wake Forest has a quick turnaround as the team travels north to take on Boston College Friday afternoon. First serve against the Eagles is set for 3:30 p.m.
