Wake Forest sweeps Stanford 4-0 in the NCAA Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history

ATHENS, Ga. – For the first time in program history, the top-seeded Wake Forest men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship following a 4-0 victory over No. 16 seed Stanford Thursday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

Making their fifth overall appearance in the Round of 16, and third consecutive appearance, the Demon Deacons (30-2) punched their ticket to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 9 seed North Carolina.

The Deacs’ sweep over Stanford (18-9) started with a tightly contested doubles point. The Cardinal picked up a 6-4 win in the No. 2 slot after break the duo of Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev early in the set. Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky evened the doubles score at 1-all, using an early break of their own en route to a 6-3 decision.

Coming down to the top doubles spot, the fourth-ranked duo of Skander Mansouri and Chrisitan Seraphim found themselves in a battle with the No. 54 duo of Tom Fawcett and Yale Goldberg. Both sides would hold serve until the final game of the set. Up 6-5, Mansouri and Seraphim were up 40-0 in the game before clinching the doubles point when their opponent double faulted, giving the Deacs a 1-0 lead into singles.

From there, the Demon Deacons picked up three quick victories at the No. 1, 3 and 4 spots to complete the sweep over the Cardinal.

After Wake Forest took five of the first six sets played across all courts, Chrysochos put the Deacs up 2-0, as the fifth-ranked player in the country topped Fawcett, the 11th-ranked player nationally, 6-2, 6-0. Seraphim then put the Demon Deacons a point from victory, as the 84th-ranked player in the country cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 slot.

For the third consecutive match in the postseason, Mansouri would be the one to clinch the victory for the Deacs. Ranked 13th in the country, Mansouri battled to a 6-4 victory in the opening set before closing out the match with a 6-2 decision in the second set.

Wake Forest will now face No. 9 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals, and will be seeing the Tar Heels for the second time this season. Back on March 10, the Demon Deacons picked up a 4-3 victory over the Tar Heels in their ACC opener.

First serve at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.
