Deacs Remain Perfect at NCAA Individual Championships
Three individuals in singles and one doubles team advance to Round of 16.
ATHENS, Ga. – The Wake Forest men’s tennis team continued its perfect start at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as all three singles representatives and lone doubles team won their matches Thursday (May 25) to advance to the Round of 16.
Petros Chrysochos, the No. 3 seed in the field and ranked fifth nationally, kicked off competition Thursday for the Deacs with a straight sets victory over 37th-ranked Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern. Late in the first set, Chrysochos earned a break to close out a 6-4 decision before breaking early in the second set en route to an easy 6-2 victory. In the Round of 16, Chrysochos will face Alex Ghilea of Oklahoma at 12:30 p.m.
Freshman Borna Gojo continued his impressive run in the NCAA Singles Championship as he advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nathan Ponwith of Georgia. With the victory, Gojo secured All-America status in singles. He becomes the second-straight freshman to earn All-America accolades for the Demon Deacons, joining Chrysochos who earned the honor a season ago. Gojo will look to continue his run in the singles draw against Jack Findel-Hawkins of North Florida at 10 a.m. Friday.
Skander Mansouri avoided an upset as he escaped with a three-set victory over David Biosca of East Tennessee State. After taking the first set, 6-4, Mansouri was pushed to a tiebreaker in the second set. It would require extra points, but Mansouri would fall, 8-6, forcing a third and final set. Play in the third set would go to a tiebreaker, but this time Mansouri gained control early and cruised to a 7-1 victory. The junior will face John Cailleau of Texas Tech in the Round of 16 at 10 a.m.
Play Wednesday also saw the doubles competition begin. Mansouri and Christian Seraphim, the No. 4 seed in the field, opened play against Beck Pennington and Enzo Wallart of Kentucky. The two doubles teams met in the second round of the NCAA Team Championship at No. 1 doubles, with Wake Forest prevailing, 6-2. The Demon Deacons continued their success over the Wildcats with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to advance to the Round of 16 where they will face of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey of Mississippi State. Earlier this year, the two tandems met in a regular season match, with action going unfinished tied at 6-all.
