KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wake Forest men’s soccer senior captains Jacori Hayes and Ian Harkes have been tabbed MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists, the NSCAA announced Tuesday.
Wake Forest is the only program to have two student-athletes represented on the list. Hayes and Harkes follow 2015 Wake Forest standout Jack Harrison as the most recent Demon Deacons named semifinalists. The duo is the second Wake Forest pair to be named semifinalists in the same season, following Corben Bone and Ike Opara in 2009. Since 2003, Wake Forest has had 13 student-athletes, including Hayes and Harkes, named semifinalists for the honor. Three players – Bone, Sam Cronin and Marcus Tracy – have gone on to be named finalists while Tracy won the award in 2008 and stands as the only Demon Deacon in program history to win the award.
Hayes and Harkes account for two of the ACC’s four representatives on the list. The Deacons are joined by Tim Kubel of Louisville and Miles Robinson of Syracuse. Of the 15 players on the list, six are still in action with their respective teams in the NCAA Tournament, including Kubel of Louisville, Reagan Dunk of Denver, Julian Gressel of Providence and Tomas Hilliard-Arce of Stanford.
The winner of the Hermann Trophy is selected by Division I coaches who are current NSCAA members. Three finalists will be named on Dec. 14 at the conclusion of voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches and the 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on January 6, 2017, to formally announce this year’s winner.
Both Hayes and Harkes were named First Team All-ACC members along with fellow senior captain goalkeeper Alec Ferrell. Hayes leads Wake Forest with eight goals thus far this season and Harkes is third on the team with four. Both were also named finalists for the Senior CLASS Award and the ACC All-Tournament Team.
Wake Forest’s season continues in the Elite Eight on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. when the Demon Deacons host ACC foe Virginia Tech at Spry Stadium. All-time, the Demon Deacons have dominated Virginia Tech with a 16-3-2 record, including an 8-1-0 mark in Winston-Salem. Last time the two met in 2014, though, the Hokies earned a 2-0 victory in Blacksburg, Va. Before that, Wake Forest had not lost in 14 games against the Hokies dating back to Sept. 7, 1997.
