GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 5-ranked Wake Forest battled back from a 3-1 halftime deficit, playing Furman to a 4-4 draw in the exhibition-opener on Sunday night.

Isaiah Parente scored twice, while Justin McMaster and Kyle McCurley also found the back of the net to lead the offensive attack.

"This is why we schedule these games, because we know we are going to see the best teams have to offer," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "The guys showed a lot of resilience tonight. We have a lot to work on and have to get healthy now. It was good that the young guys learned what it's like to have a target on our backs."

In the seventh minute, a shot by Omir Fernandez ricocheted off the crossbar, but Parente was there to put away the rebound and put the Demon Deacons up, 1-0.

The Paladins responded with three-straight first-half goals from Laurence Wyke, Danny Kierath and Dalton Souder to take a 3-1 lead.

Wake Forest scored twice in a two-minute span to tie the game early in the second half. McMaster finished off a Bruno Lapa pass in the 52nd minute to cut the margin to 3-2, and Parente headed in a McMaster cross in the 53rd minute for the equalizer.

Kyle McCurley finished off a loose ball in the 62nd minute to put the Deacs ahead, 4-3, but Furman's Emery May took advantage of a turnover to knot the score at 4-4 in the 66th minute.

The Deacs earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute, but Lapa's attempt was saved by substitute keeper Max Fisher as the game ended in a draw.

Twenty-one different Deacons saw game action, including three different goalkeepers. Dominic Petersmade a pair of saves without allowing a goal to lead the Wake Forest keepers.

"Everyone who was healthy played at least 30 minutes," Muuss added. "We have a lot to figure out in terms of having our best players in the best spots at the right time of the match."

Wake Forest returns home for another exhibition against Loyola Maryland on Aug. 18 before opening the regular season against No. 2 Indiana on Aug. 24.
