RALEIGH, N.C. – Former Wake Forest point guard Muggsy Bogues will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame this spring. Bogues is one of 12 members of the Class of 2020, the Hall announced Wednesday (Jan. 22).

Joining Bogues in this year’s class are Debbie Antonelli, Mack Brown, Dennis Craddock, Dr. Charles Kernodle, Mac Morris, Trot Nixon, Julius Peppers, Bobby Purcell, Judy Rose, Tim Stevens and Donnell Woolford. They will be enshrined during the 57th annual induction banquet on the evening of Friday, May 1, at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Bogues was a standout point guard for the Demon Deacons from 1984-87 and remains the school leader in career assists (781) and career steals (275). During his senior season in 1986-87, he received first-team All-ACC honors while winning the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Trophy, annually given to the nation’s best player who is six-foot tall or shorter. Bogues owns three of the four 200 assist seasons in Wake Forest history, including his school-record 276 assists in 1986-87. His No. 14 jersey is one of 11 numbers retired by the Demon Deacons.

The shortest player in NBA history at 5-3, Bogues played 14 seasons in the league after being drafted 12th overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. After one season in Washington, he spent the majority of his career, 10 seasons, with the Charlotte Hornets, before ending his career with the stints with the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors. Bogues ranks 23rd in NBA history with 6,726 career assists and 61st in NBA history with 1,369 career steals.

Bogues will be fifth former Demon Deacon basketball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Dickie Hemric, Jack Murdock, Billy Packer and Rodney Rogers. Former Wake Forest coaches Bones McKinney and Dave Odom have also been inducted.

The N.C. Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1963. A permanent exhibit, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is located on the third floor of the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh and features significant objects and memorabilia donated by inductees. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

To be eligible for induction into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame a candidate must be a native of the state or have maintained residence in the state for at least 10 consecutive years.
