WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Maxwell Football Club today announced the expansion of its watch lists for the 83rd Maxwell Award and the 25th Bednarik Award. Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman has been added to the Maxwell Award Watch List while linebacker Justin Strnad has been added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame.
Newman, a 6-4, 230-pound redshirt junior from Graham, N.C., has led Wake Forest to a 5-0 record this fall as the Demon Deacons are preparing to host Louisville on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at BB&T Field. Newman leads the ACC and is fourth in the nation in total offense yards per game at 356.6. He is completing 69.6 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,521 yards and leads the ACC with 14 touchdown passes.
Strnad, a 6-3, 235-pound redshirt senior inside linebacker from Palm Harbor, Fla. (East Lake), leads the ACC in tackles with 10.6 per game. He ranks 15th in the nation in tackles per game and has hit double figures in three contests this season and in eight of his last 12 games.
“Jamie and Justin have provided leadership on each side of the ball and they have made great contributions to our team success this season,” said head coach Dave Clawson.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on Oct. 29 and three finalists for each award will be announced Nov. 25. The Watch List candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee.
