WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 11 Louisville scored five runs in the fifth and four in the ninth to defeat Wake Forest, 11-6, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Demon Deacons (8-11, 3-2 ACC) and Cardinals (16-3, 3-2 ACC) will square off in the rubber game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Wake Forest jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 6-2 before Louisville stormed back.
In the first, DJ Poteet led off with a home run. He went deep in back-to-back Wake Forest at bats as he also ended Friday's game with a longball.
After singles by Jake Mueller and Johnny Aiello, Bobby Seymourrecorded an RBI and Michael Ludowigdrilled a two-run double to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Cardinals scored runs in the second and third to cut the margin in half, to 4-2.
Wake Forest answered in the bottom of the third with Seymour's first-career homer and a Ludowig RBI single to make the score 6-2 before Louisville's big fifth inning.
Tyler Fitzgerald and Josh Stowers hit back-to-back homers to make the score 6-4, then Logan Wyatt hit an RBI single and Justin Lavey added a two-run knock to put the Cards ahead for good, 7-6.
Four walks and a hit by pitch helped Louisville plate four more in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Wake Forest reliever Tyler Witt had the best outing of his career to keep the Deacs in the game in the middle innings. He tossed 3.0 shutout frames, allowing just one hit and no walks, also notching a strikeout.
The Deacs got to Cardinal starter Shay Smiddy for six runs in 3.0 innings, but were unable to get anything going against the bullpen. Bryan Hoeing (3-1) tossed 3.1 shutout frames, followed by Nick Bennett (0.2 IP) and Sam Bordner (2.0 IP), who notched his eighth save in nine outings.
