The Demon Deacons took advantage of three home runs and a strong pitching effort by Connor Johnstone and Griffin Roberts to earn the first sweep of the season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 20 Wake Forest completed a series sweep over Notre Dame with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.
The Demon Deacons (28-10, 12-6 ACC) blasted three home runs and took advantage of another strong pitching effort to take down the Fighting Irish (15-20, 7-11 ACC) for the third straight day.
Stuart Fairchild, Johnny Aiello and Jonathan Pryor each had two hits and a home run to lead the offense, while Connor Johnstone set a new career-high with eight strikeouts over 7.0 innings of one-run, five-hit ball to earn the win and improve to 5-0. Griffin Roberts pitched 2.0 hitless innings in relief, as well.
In the bottom of the first, Pryor walked and Fairchild singled. Fairchild stole second base and the throw to second was mishandled, allowing Pryor to scamper home for the first run of the game.
Fairchild knocked an opposite-field homer in the third, his 11th of the season, to double the lead to 2-0.
Aiello drilled a 441-foot homer in the fourth to bring home Breazeale and make the score 4-0, and Pryor added a 429-foot blast to right-center to close out the scoring for the Deacs.
The only run of the game for the Irish came in the seventh, when Cole Daily singled and scored on a Daniel Jung double.
For Wake Forest, Jake Mueller also added a multi-hit game and Nick DiPonzio went 1-for-2 in his first start in over a month.
CLEAN BASEBALL
• During its undefeated week in which the team went 5-0, Wake Forest didn't commit a single error.
