I think we all expected some attrition with this roster and it began today with the Miles Overton's decision to transfer from Wake Forest.
If I had been told this earlier in the season it wouldn't have surprised me at all, but Miles had seemed to break through and play some meaningful minutes, including actually leading the Deacs in scoring in the 84-69 home loss to Minnesota. Let's remember, however, that his performance against Minnesota came on heels of a DNP against Delaware State. Overton had played just 10 minutes in the four games prior to leading the team against the Golden Gophers.
The Deacs were over-committed for next year, with the additions of Crawford, Collins and Moore, so this solves that problem right away. If you think about it, no disrespect at all to Miles, most fans would gleefully trade Overton for Moore - and that's essentially what happened today.
I'm hearing the staff would love to add a shooting guard to the class that's already signed, so don't be surprised if another player makes a similar decision. The earlier that happens, the better for Wake as far as recruiting. If a scholarship doesn't open up until later in the season, the available choices become much slimmer in nature.
Timing for Overton's departure probably makes sense for both parties. With the holiday break approaching, if a kid isn't truly committed to the program long-term, it serves their purposes much better to spend time with family and look for a new home, rather than go through the rigorous practice schedule that is sure to be a part of these kids' lives the next few weeks.
