Wake Forest pitchers three-hit the Spartans, while Patrick Frick delivered the game-winning single to cap the victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest pitchers combined to allow just three hits, while Patrick Frick came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th as the Demon Deacons defeated UNCG, 2-1.
On the mound, Tyler Witt made the start and allowed one run on two hits and two walks over 5.0 innings with four strikeouts, keeping the Demon Deacons' (5-4) deficit at just one run.
Wake Forest tied the game at 1-1 on a Bobby Seymour RBI single in the sixth, while the pitching staff kept putting up zeroes.
Bobby Hearn tossed 2.0 perfect innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts. Antonio Menendez entered for the eighth and allowed just one single over 3.0 shutout innings, striking out three as he earned the victory.
The Deacs outhit the Spartans (3-3), 11-3, but at one point Wake Forest was just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
That changed in the 10th inning. Michael Ludowig and Seymour started the inning with singles. Then Chris Lanzilli extended his hitting streak to nine games with another single, but associate head coach Bill Cilento—filling in for under-the-weather head coach Tom Walter—held Ludowig at third. That set up Frick's single up the middle to put the game away.
"I'm proud of our kids. Our kids played hard, they played well," Cilento said. "There were plenty of times in that game where things could have gone the opposite way and we found a way to make a pitch or make a play to keep us in the game, and got a chance to win it late...[Our pitching was] A-plus. It doesn't get much better than that. They were in the zone, commanding multiple pitches and were on the attack from the first pitch on."
Seymour matched his career high with four hits, finishing the day 4-for-5. Frick (2-for-3, two walks) and Jake Mueller (2-for-3, two walks) also reached base four times apiece to lead the Deacon offense.
UNCG starter Austin Koehn struck out four over 5.0 innings of one-run ball, while Corey Jackson tossed 1.2 shutout frames in relief. Spartan closer Chad Sykes took the loss, surrendering a run on six hits over 2.2 innings, The run he allowed was the first he has conceded in 6.2 innings on the mound.
Wake Forest is back in action this weekend with a three-game series against Furman. Friday's game will be held at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, Saturday will be at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, and Sunday is set for Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
