Deacs Knock Off Defending NCAA Champs, No. 18 CCU
Wake Forest hit three homers in a 13-8 victory over No. 18-ranked Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Wake Forest knocked off the defending champions, defeating No. 18 Coastal Carolina, 13-8, at Springs Brooks Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Demon Deacon (10-4) offense stayed hot, totaling 16 hits, including three home runs and four doubles. Jake Mueller led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Ben Breazeale was 3-for-6 with a homer, double and three runs scored.
The Chanticleers (9-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, including a leadoff homer from Billy Cooke.
Wake Forest claimed the lead in the second. After RBI singles from Logan Harvey and Mueller, Stuart Fairchildmatched his career-high with a three-run blast, his fifth longball of the season.
Coastal tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the second, but the Deacs took the lead for good in the third. Harvey had an RBI single and Mueller added a two-run single to jump in front, 8-5.
Breazeale added an opposite-field two-run homer in the fourth to increase the lead to 10-5.
The Chanticleers plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the margin to 10-8, but Johnny Aielloanswered right back with a two-run homer to right-center, and Mueller added an RBI double to make the score 13-8.
Wake Forest relievers held Coastal Carolina scoreless the last five innings. Carter Bach forced a double play and earned his first-career win with 1.0 scoreless frames.
Morgan McSweeney (1.2 innings, four strikeouts), Chris Farish (0.1 inning, one strikeout), Rayne Supple (0.1 inning, one strikeout) and Griffin Roberts (1.0 innings, two strikeouts) were also effective in relief.
Wake Forest pitchers combined to strike out 13 Chanticleers.
Offensively, Keegan Maronpot and Logan Harvey (two RBIs, three runs) each recorded two hits and a walk. Jonathan Pryor went 1-for-3 with three walks.
The Deacs open ACC play this weekend, playing host to No. 20 NC State from Friday-Sunday.--
