Stuart Fairchild hit a pair of homers and Parker Dunshee posted a strong outing, but Miami took the lead in the eighth inning to win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Miami rallied in the last three innings to take down No. 12 Wake Forest, 5-2, at Louisville Slugger Field on Friday.
Stuart Fairchild hit a pair of solo homers and Parker Dunshee allowed one run over 7.0 innings, but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead for the Demon Deacons (39-18).
The big hit eluded Wake Forest all day, as the Deacs finished just 3-for-19 with runners on base and left 16 runners on base. For the Hurricanes (31-26), the clutch hits came in the final innings as they pulled in front.
Fairchild went deep over the left-field wall in the first inning and right-field wall in the third inning to put Wake Forest up, 2-0. He became the first Deacon to hit two homers in an ACC Tournament game since Cory Sullivan did so against NC State in 2001.
Edgar Michelangeli put Miami on the board with a solo homer in the seventh, Dunshee's final frame. The Wake Forest senior allowed just that one run on four hits and three walks, striking out four.
Miami took the lead against Deacon reliever Griffin Roberts (1-4) in the eighth. Johnny Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Romy Gonzalez RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Gonzalez advanced to third on the throw into home and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-2.
After a walk and a single, Ruiz added a two-run double in the ninth to give Miami insurance.
Wake Forest drew 10 total walks, including two apiece from Gavin Sheets, Ben Breazeale and Logan Harvey, but none of the 10 came around to score.
Gregory Veliz earned the win with 2.1 hitless frames in relief, striking out four despite walking seven.
The Deacs stranded runners in every inning, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth, and leaving two on in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
Wake Forest will now await the NCAA Selection Shows. The 16 host sites will be revealed on social media, including Facebook and Twitter between 8:30 and 9 p.m. on Sunday. On Monday, the full field of 64 will be announced on ESPN2 at noon.
