WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest wrapped up an undefeated opening weekend by defeating VMI, 8-4, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday evening.

After starting three hours late due to inclement weather, the Demon Deacons (3-0) utilized a strong all-around performance to earn the victory.

The middle of the order, Nate Mondou and Will Craig, combined to knock in seven of Wake Forest's eight runs.

Mondou finished 2-for-3 with a homer and a double to go along with three RBIs, while Craig finished 3-for-4 with a longball and four RBIs.

Drew Loepprich was impressive on the mound in his first start of the season, allowing two runs over 7.0 frames on five hits and one walk, striking out three.

Chris Farish struck out the side in the eighth inning, not allowing a hit in his inning of work.

Leading 8-2 in the ninth, the Deacs surrendered a hit, three walks and a hit-by-pitch before Donnie Sellers came in and struck out the only batter he faced to earn his second save.

In addition to Craig and Mondou, Rodriguez, Conway and Gavin Sheets recorded multi-hit games as Wake Forest finished 13-for-35 (.371) on the day.

The 3-0 start is Wake Forest's best since opening the 2009 season 6-0.

David Geary hit a two-run homer in the third to put VMI (2-2) up, 2-0, but Mondou's leadoff homer in the fourth cut the deficit in half.

The Deacs then broke it open in the fifth. Wake Forest started the inning with singles from Kevin Conway, Jonathan Pryor and Joey Rodriguez. Mondou then doubled off the right-center wall to bring home two, and Craig cleared the bases with an opposite-field three-run blast, putting the Deacs up, 6-2.

Wake Forest picked up insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings. First, Craig drove in Rodriguez on an RBI single in the seventh, then Conway went the other way for a solo blast in the eighth to push the margin to 8-2, before the Deacs sealed the win in the ninth.

The Deacs are scheduled to return to action at David F. Couch Ballpark on Tuesday against Davidson for a 4 p.m. contest.
