Wake Forest Drops Opener at Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish plated three first-inning runs en route to a 5-2 victory over the Deacs.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A slow start proved costly as Wake Forest lost the series-opener against Notre Dame, 5-2, at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday night.

The Fighting Irish (9-11, 3-4 ACC) scored three first-inning runs and led wire-to-wire.

The Demon Deacons (10-12, 4-3 ACC) scored runs in the second and ninth, but Notre Dame tallied a pair of late insurance runs to keep an extended lead.

After conceding three runs in the first inning, Griffin Roberts settled in and held the Irish scoreless for the next five. He finished with three runs allowed on eight hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

The Deacs couldn't get to Irish starter Scott Tully (3-1), who alllowed a run on three hits and three walks in 6.2 innings.

Notre Dame's first inning featured a two-run triple by Matt Vierling and Daniel Jung RBI double.

Wake Forest's best scoring opportunity came in the second inning when the first three Deacs reached, on singles from Bobby Seymour and Shane Muntz and a Chris Lanzilli walk.

Logan Harvey then hit a hard line drive to deep left field, but it got caught up by a the wind blowing in and was caught for a sacrifice fly. The next two Deacs were retired to end the threat.

The Irish added insurance runs on a Nick Podkul RBI single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

In the ninth, Wake Forest brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. Lanzilly walked and Harvey singled before a Patrick Frick RBI single, but the Irish forced a groundout to end the game.

For Notre Dame, Podkul led the way with a 4-for-4 effort. Harvey was the lone Deacon to record a multi-hit game.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2:05 p.m., with first pitch Sunday slated for 11:30 a.m.
