No. 24 Deacs Shut Out Miami, 9-0
Connor Johnstone tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season as Wake Forest won a series in Coral Gables for the first time.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Connor Johnstone tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season as No. 24-ranked Wake Forest clinched the series over Miami with a 9-0 win at Mark Light Field on Sunday afternoon.
The series victory was the first-ever for the Demon Deacons (20-9, 8-4 ACC) in Coral Gables and just the second-ever over the Hurricanes (12-16, 5-7 ACC).
Johnstone improved to 4-0, allowing just three hits and no walks over 9.0 shutout frames, striking out five. He also tossed a shutout in the season-opener over Nicholls after no Deacon had thrown a complete-game shutout in more than a decade before that.
The Wake Forest offense came back to life, totaling nine runs on 11 hits, including four home runs from Bruce Steel, Logan Harvey, Keegan Maronpot and Gavin Sheets.
Jake Mueller got the Deacs on the board in the second inning with a two-run opposite-field single to plate Harvey and Maronpot.
Steel blasted his seventh homer of the year in the fourth and Harvey added his third longball in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-0.
Maronpot hit Wake Forest's third homer of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot, to push the margin to 6-0.
Sheets added a three-run blast in the ninth to close out the scoring.
JOHNSTONE'S EFFICIENCY
• Connor Johnstone needed less than 100 pitches to toss his shutout, finishing with 96.
• His longest innings were the second and ninth, each of which took 15 pitches. He had four frames which required single-digit pitches.
• He retired 17 straight batters after a leadoff double in the third, a stretch that took him into the eighth without allowing another baserunner.
ANOTHER ACC SERIES WIN
• Wake Forest has now won its first four ACC series after previously beating NC State, Duke and Georgia Tech.
• That's the best ACC start since winning six straight ACC series to open the 2002 season, a year the Deacs hosted an NCAA Regional.
ON DECK
• Wake Forest returns to North Carolina for a home-and-home against Elon on Tuesday (Winston-Salem) and Wednesday (Elon).
• Then, the Deacs return to the road for a weekend series at top-five foe Louisville.
