WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest women’s basketball extended its winning streak to four in a row Sunday afternoon as the Demon Deacons came away with a 64-58 victory over Duke in ACC action at LJVM Coliseum. The win marks Wake Forest’s first against Duke since March 5, 1993, snapping a 45-game losing streak against the Blue Devils.
Now at 15-11 overall and 6-7 in the ACC, Wake Forest has now topped Duke, NC State and North Carolina in the same season for the just the second time in program history and the first time since 1987-88. The loss drops Duke to 17-10 overall and 6-7 in the ACC. The Deacs and Blue Devils are now tied for seventh place in the conference standings with three games to go.
After Wake Forest built an 11-point lead at halftime at 33-22, Duke opened the third quarter on a 16-2 run to erase the deficit and while the Blue Devils only allowed the Demon Deacons five points in the quarter, the lead at halftime was enough to keep the Deacs and Blue Devils tied at 38 headed to the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded field goals to open the final quarter but with Duke leading 42-40, Ariel Stephenson hit a three-pointer in front of the Wake Forest bench to spur an 8-0 Demon Deacon run to put the Deacs up by six with 6:16 to play.
Trailing by eight, Oderah Chidom knocked down a layup to cut the lead to six and hit two free throws two possessions later to make it a four-point game. Stephenson then answered the Duke points again with a jumper to put the Deacs up 56-50 with 1:39 to play, leading to a Duke timeout.
Over the course of the next minute, the two teams traded points until Angela Salvadores hit a three-pointer from the corner with 28 seconds to play to cut the Wake Forest lead to four at 60-56, but Amber Campbell hit four free throws to close out the win and in the process clinched her career high of 27 points.
Aside from Campbell’s game-high 27 points, Stephenson was second on the team with 11 points and Elisa Penna recorded her second-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Overall, Wake Forest shot 39.3 percent in the contest and shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half.
Duke was led by Oderah Chidom, as she finished with 18 points while Salvadores posted 16. Rebecca Greenwell posted 11 points to give Duke three players in double figures.
Like each of the previous two contests, Wake Forest allowed its opponent to jump out to a sizable lead out of the gate as the Blue Devils opened the game on an 11-2 run. After exchanging free throws to make it 12-3, Wake Forest went on a 13-0 run over the final 3:38 of the first quarter to take a 16-12 lead to the second.
Duke cut the Wake Forest lead to one at the 9:00 mark of the second quarter, breaking the Blue Devils’ scoreless drought of 5:13 spanning the two quarters. After the two teams went back and forth until the score was 21-18 Blue Devils following a three-pointer by Salvadores, Wake Forest went on a prolonged 15-0 run while holding Duke scoreless for a span of 6:19 in the quarter to build a 33-21 lead. Though Duke’s Faith Suggs broke the drought with a free throw late in the half, the Deacs took the 33-22 lead to halftime.
Wake Forest returns to action Thursday, Feb. 18, at home against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish come to LJVM Coliseum with a 24-1 record after beating No. 19/17 Miami 90-69 on Sunday afternoon. Notre Dame’s lone loss this season is to No. 1 Connecticut on Dec. 5.
