WF Baseball: Deacs Fall to Duke in Series Opener

The Blue Devils had three innings with at least four runs en route to a 16-2 win.


DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest dropped the series-opener to Duke, 16-2, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Friday evening.

The Blue Devils (13-9, 3-4 ACC) broke a 1-1 tie by scoring 15 consecutive runs from the third through sixth innings, including five runs in the third and fourth, and four runs in the fifth.

The Demon Deacons (13-10, 3-4 ACC) were led by Jake Mueller, who reached base three times via a double and two walks. Tyler Witt had a strong outing in relief, conceding an unearned run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

Wake Forest managed three hits against Duke. Blue Devil starter Ben Gross gave up just one hit over 5.0 innings, striking out six and walking one.

Duke received home runs from Michael Rothenberg (3-for-4, 3 RBIs), Chase Cheek (three RBIs) and Ethan Murray (two walks, four RBIs), while Rudy Maxwell had three hits and scored four runs.

Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday on ACC Network Extra.
