CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wake Forest jumped out to a big lead en route to a 13-7 victory over Furman on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark, home of the Charlotte Knights.
The win was the 270th of head coach Tom Walter's Wake Forest career, pushing him past Marvin Crater, who accumulated 269 victories over 12 seasons, as the second-winningest coach in program history.
The series continues on Sunday with a doubleheader at David F. Couch Ballpark. Due to impending rain, the first game has been moved up to 10 a.m.
Colin Peluse recorded a strong start on the mound for the Demon Deacons (6-4), allowing a run on four hits and two walks over 6.0 innings with four strikeouts.
Six different Deacons had two hits apiece: Patrick Frick, Chris Lanzilli, DJ Poteet, Bobby Seymour, Brendan Tinsman and Michael Turconi.
The Paladins (2-5) scored the first run of the game on a Jared Mihalik solo homer in the second, but the Demon Deacons (6-4) scored 13 consecutive runs, including five in the bottom of the second, to take control of the game.
Frick hit an RBI single and Tinsman delivered a two-run double, followed by RBI groundouts from Poteet and Jake Mueller to make the lead 5-1.
Frick added another RBI single in the third and Bruce Steel, playing his first game of the season, hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to push the score to 7-1.
Wake Forest recorded three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Seymour cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left-field line to increase the lead to 10-1, and Poteet roped a three-run homer to push the margin to 13-1.
Furman kept it close with three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth.
