Wake Forest used a 13-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to top Boston College, 22-9.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest took advantage of a 13-run fifth inning to grab a 22-9 win over Boston College in game two of the series at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. It was Wake Forest's first time scoring 20 runs in a game since plating 25 at Elon in 2015.
The Eagles (10-7, 2-3 ACC) scored four runs in the first inning and took an eventual 5-0 lead before the Demon Deacons (11-9, 2-3 ACC) stormed back with two in the fourth and 13 in the fifth—tied for the third-biggest inning in program history.
Offensively, Wake Forest hit a season-high four home runs, including a grand slam from Patrick Frick and blasts from Brendan Tinsman, Bobby Seymour and Michael Turconi. The Deacs also drew 13 walks and hit four doubles.
Jared Shuster, a two-time ACC Pitcher of the Week this year, got back on track after the 4-0 deficit, throwing perfect second and third innings with two strikeouts in each to minimize the damage. He finished by allowing six hits and a walk in 5.0 innings, striking out seven to earn the win and improve to 4-0.
Dante Baldelli hit a RBI groundout for BC in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Eagles.
"It was good to finally have some quality at bats in a row," head coach Tom Walter said. "And [Jared] Shuster, he battled. He could have folded in the first inning, but he managed to go five and pick up the win."
From there, the bats began to fire for the Demon Deacons. Seymour got the Deacons going offensively, hitting a two-run home run, his first of the season, to knock in Patrick Frick in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer was Wake Forest's first hit of the game.
A walk and a throwing error put Deacons on second and third with no outs to start the bottom of the fifth, setting up a Bruce Steel RBI single that brought in Tinsman to cut the margin to 5-3. With the bases loaded and no outs, a Frick grand slam propelled the Deacons to a 7-5 lead.
From there, Chris Lanzilli hit an RBI double, DJ Poteet drew a bases-loaded walk, Steel added a two-run single, Logan Harvey hit an RBI double and Turconi crushed a three-run homer, the first of his career, to put the Deacons up 15-5.
After a Tinsman RBI double in the sixth, the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to 16-8 as the Deacons saw a series of pitching changes. A Tinsman three-run homer brought the score back to 19-8, then a Frick sac fly helped the Deacs eclipse to 20-run mark and make the score 20-9. Lanzilli then doubled to plate two and close out the scoring.
Tyler Witt allowed one run on four hits in relief, striking out five batters over 2.1 innings to cap off the victory.
Frick (five), Tinsman (four) and Turconi (three) each set or tied new career-highs in RBIs. Lanzilli finished the day 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Tinsman went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and two walks. Steel was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Harvey went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs.
The final game of the series is at 1 p.m. on Sunday on ACC Network Extra.
