WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest head coach Tom Walterearned the 700th win of his head coaching career as the Demon Deacons swept Furman in a doubleheader on Sunday by scores of 5-1 and 11-2.

In his 23rd year as a head coach and his 10th season at Wake Forest, Walter is the second-winningest coach in program history. He becomes the fifth active ACC coach to reach the 700-win plateau, joining Mike Martin, Mike Fox, Danny Hall and Elliott Avent, each of whom has been a head coach for more than 30 years.

"You know how it is, it took five years longer than it should've," Walter joked after the game. "Obviously, it's a great accomplishment. Great coaches and players will help you get wins."

The Deacs (8-4) completed the three-game sweep of the Paladins (2-7), fueled in large part by the starting pitching. Wake Forest's three starters—Colin Peluse, Jared Shuster and Morgan McSweeney—combined to allow just one run over 19.0 innings.

"Two weekends in a row, we had to find some energy reserves and deal with some adversity and some tough travel and conditions," Walter said. "I'm really proud of our guys and the way they came out. It starts with pitching, your momentum comes from pitching...I'm really happy with the starting pitching all weekend."

Wake Forest travels to No. 19 Coastal Carolina for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Game 1: Wake Forest 5, Furman 1

Jared Shuster continued his dominant start to the season en route to his third victory on the mound. He tossed 7.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball, striking out 12 batters. He has struck out at least 11 batters in each of his first three starts and leads the ACC with 34 strikeouts.

Two big hits were all the Demon Deacons needed offensively. In the fourth, Brendan Tinsman delivered his first career home run for what proved to be the game-winning runs, while Bobby Seymour roped a bases-clearing double in the seventh to make Wake Forest's lead 5-0.

After tossing a scoreless eighth inning, Antonio Menendez conceded two hits and a walk as Furman avoided the shutout and one-hitter with a ninth-inning run. Menendez struck out three over his 2.0 innings of work.

Seymour, Tinsman and Patrick Frick notched two hits apiece to lead the Deacon offense.

Game 2: Wake Forest 11, Furman 2

In the nightcap, it was Morgan McSweeney who turned in a scoreless start on the mound. The junior avoided a pair of potential early rallies, settling in to toss 6.0 shutout frames on three hits and four walks, striking out five.

William Fleming, Wyatt Beddow and Carter Bach chipped in with scoreless outings in relief.

At the plate, Patrick Frick, Jake Mueller, Bobby Seymour and Michael Turconi each recorded two hits. Chris Lanzilli was 1-for-1 with a three-run blast, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch, while Bruce Steel went 1-for-2 with his first home run since the 2017 Winston-Salem Regional.

In the second inning, Brendan Tinsman hit an RBI single and scored on a two-run blast by Steel as the Deacs took a 3-0 lead. That margin more than doubled in the next inning when Seymour beat out an infield single and Lanzilli followed with a three-run homer, making the Wake Forest advantage 7-0.

Patrick Frick hit an RBI double in the fifth as Wake Forest followed that with three more runs to increase the lead to 11-0 before Furman scored twice in the top of the ninth.
