I’ll start by saying I’ve gone back and forth on whether to post this, and how much information to include. I think I’ll hit a balance here of telling you some solid, well-sourced info without violating trust and privacy.

The subject here is Sam Hartman’s non-football medical issue that has him out indefinitely.

I’m not going to name the diagnosis. I think that comes out in due time; that time isn’t now.

The second half of this story is the timeframe … I’m hearing mid- to late-September.

I genuinely believe Dave Clawson did not have a timeline when he told us last week that it was too early to tell. In those first couple of days it was an unknown of whether this was a recovery that would take weeks or months. Hence Clawson being misquoted with the “this year” part (but I digress).

Things turned out better than initially feared, is how I’d put it.

Based on the timeline, it’ll be Mitch Griffis as QB1, Michael Kern as backup for the first two games (VMI, @ Vanderbilt). And then this is what Clawson and the rest of the staff have to figure out: If it’s safe to play Hartman against Liberty (Sept. 17), do you put him in there to get timing before the first game that really matters?

Or do you rep the hell out of him in practice, keep his status under wraps, and have the return come against Clemson (Sept. 24)?

It’s another one of those “I’m glad I’m not the one making that decision” moments.

Of course, this is a fluid situation. If something happens in the rehabilitation process, it could be October before you see No. 10 on the field. It doesn’t seem like you’ll have a final-month reappearance for Hartman, though.

I’m aware this isn’t *much* info, but it’s what I’m comfortable putting on a message board to keep you informed.
