Spent Saturday in Winston-Salem, catching some of the CP3 Live AAU event at D1 Sports, then went over to BB&T Field for the last Wake Forest football camp of the year.
  • Watched the CP3 16U team compete and get tested for the first time in the tournament against WCBA Elite Stevens. The CP3 team was slated to have four potential Wake prospects, and they came out with a 53-51 win. They eventually won the tournament with a title game win over the same squad Sunday afternoon 66-64 in front of coach Danny Manning.
  • Kris Monroe, who has offers from NC St., UNCG and Charleston quit the team right after the Peach Jam I was told, and was not there.
  • 4-star guard Coby White nailed a 3-pointer on his very first touch, and has an explosive first step to the basket. Has good handles and is able to get to the rim seemingly at will. He scored 21 Sunday in the championship game. White attends the same high school as Aaron Rountree, and I got to speak to his coach, Rob Salter (and Salter's father).
  • Strangely enough, when talking to John Newman after the game, he didn't think he had his normal game going. Perhaps that was the case, but what he did was effective Saturday, as he was always in the right place at the right time. Runs the floor well and capitalized on all his scoring opportunities at the rim. In a tight game, he score the go ahead and-1, and was solid at the free throw stripe at the finish.
  • Greensboro Day's Will Dillard showed an nearly automatic mid-range game and had good court vision. Had a real nice give-and-go in transition as he filled the lane for the finish.
  • Newman and Dillard's coach, Fred Johnson, was also watching the action.
  • After getting to BB&T Field, rain and storms set in just as the camp moved past the highlight and introduction phase. There was about a 30-to-45 minute delay because of lightning.
  • A few notable attendees included wide receivers Rico Arnolds, Bryce Wheaten, Marquise Thornes and Preston Parsons; quarterbacks Ian Driscoll, Bryce Moore and Caleb Lynum, running backs Larry Basham and Cameron Cloud; linebackers James Newsome, Tyler Williams, and Tyler Bird; safeties Dionshay Cherry, Quayan Gilbert, and Jermiah Gray; corners Anthony Badgett, Jalen Hutcherson and Khari Harrison; offensive linemen Ellijah Bryant, Blake Watson, Anthony Craig, and Michael Hudson; and defensive linemen Vida Smith, Akeem Smith, Even Boozer and Trey Love.
  • I spoke basketball prospects White, Newman and Dillard; and will have those interviews up on the site over the next 24-48 hours.
