Incredible addition for coach Jen Hoover in the middle of the season. Penna can score from nearly anywhere on the court and really makes the Deacs a much different team.

This is a release from Wake media relations on Elisa Penna taking a weekly award.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Elisa Penna of Wake Forest women’s basketball has been named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. The award marks Wake Forest’s second Rookie of the Week award this season.

Penna led Wake Forest to two victories last week over North Carolina and Boston College, giving the Demon Deacons their first back-to-back ACC regular-season wins since the 2013-14 season. Over the course of the two games, Penna averaged 20 points while setting a career-high in points in both games.

Against North Carolina on Jan. 21, Penna scored a then-career-high 18 points on 7-of-16 from the field. The Bergamo, Italy, native also came away with five steals in the 75-63 victory over North Carolina, the first against the Tar Heels for Wake Forest since the 2004 season.

On Sunday afternoon on the road against Boston College, Penna upped her career-high to 22 points in the 65-59 victory. Over the course of the final 3:10 of the game, Penna hit eight free throws to help Wake Forest ice the contest. Overall, she went 12-of-12 from the free throw line on the way to helping Wake Forest pick up its 10th win in the last 11 games against the Eagles.

On the year, Penna is averaging 11.6 points in nine games after joining Wake Forest at the end of December. She has also scored in double figures in six of her nine career games, including each of the last three contests. Penna is shooting 41.2 percent from the field (35-of-85) while shooting 40 percent (12-of-30) from three-point range.

Penna is the 14th Demon Deacon in program history to earn an ACC Rookie of the Week honor and the second this season, as Ariel Stephenson picked up the award on Nov. 16 after leading Wake Forest to a 2-0 opening weekend against LSU and ETSU. Prior to Stephenson’s award, Wake Forest had not had a player earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors since Sandra Garcia did so twice in 2009-10.

Next time out on Thursday, Jan. 28, Wake Forest takes aim at its third-straight ACC win when it welcomes nationally-ranked Florida State to LJVM Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip. The Demon Deacons are also looking for their first win over a nationally-ranked team in the regular season since beating then-No. 23/25 Florida State 78-54 on Feb. 2, 2014. Two of Wake Forest’s last three wins over ranked opponents have come against FSU, as the Deacs also beat the Seminoles 80-72 on Jan. 10, 2013, when FSU was ranked No. 18/22 in the nation.
