Deacons win secret scrimmage against South Carolina

Wake Forest beat South Carolina 70-52 in a secret scrimmage held in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday night, according to a source.
The teams played situations first, and then played a traditional 40-minute game. This was Wake Forest’s only secret scrimmage; the Deacons will play an exhibition game against Winston-Salem State on Nov. 5, five days ahead of the season-opening game against William & Mary.
Coach Steve Forbes said earlier this week that it’s a preference of his to scrimmage physical teams – “I’ve always, philosophically, in the past played teams that are tough and physical in scrimmages so you can’t just come down and run your stuff,” he said – and the source confirmed that the Deacons both played physically and handled the Gamecocks’ physicality.
According to a source, the Deacons’ top seven played “really well.” That’s Daivien Williamson, Alondes Williams, Isaiah Mucius, Jake LaRavia, Dallas Walton, Khadim Sy and Cameron Hildreth.
LaRavia led Wake Forest with 15 points and five assists; Williams was the only other player in double-digit scoring with 13. Williamson, Mucius, Walton and Sy each had eight points, and Mucius and Walton had five rebounds apiece. Williamson added four assists.
It was Wake Forest’s first time playing an opponent since the ACC tournament loss against Notre Dame about 7½ months ago – granted, it’s a remade roster from last season, with eight newcomers playing this season.
“We’re a different team that that. Different faces and we played pretty well in that game, just didn’t finish it,” Forbes said earlier this week.
Williams said earlier this week that he was looking forward to playing an opponent other than his teammates.
“Man, it’s great, to be honest. I’m tired of playing my teammates, you know?” Williams said. “They’re trying to hurt me, I’m trying to bust them.
“But naw, we’re getting too used to playing against each other too much and now we’re ready to finally play against somebody else and show people what we got on this team.”
