WINSTON-SALEM - Wake Forest began a two-game homestand Tuesday night with a 80-70 loss to Virginia Tech at the LJVM Coliseum. The Demon Deacons fell to 8-8 on the year (1-5 ACC), while the Hokies (13-4, 4-2 ACC) extended their win streak to three.

Olivier Sarr had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Demon Deacons, while Brandon Childress added 16 points. Andrien White was also in double figures, scoring a season-high 14 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The teams traded runs throughout the first half. Virginia Tech took advantage of a long Deacon scoring drought midway through the first half to go on a 10-0 run and take a 20-10 lead. Wake Forest answered with a 14-2 run to retake the lead at 24-22. The Deacs led by as many as six at 31-25 before the Hokies closed out the half on an 8-0 run to take a 33-31 lead into halftime. Sarr and White each had 12 first half points to lead Wake Forest.

The Hokies used two runs in the second half to extend their lead to 66-46 with 6:30 to play. The Deacs were only able to get within 10 points the rest of the way as Virginia Tech closed out the 80-70 victory.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Olivier Sarr had his 11th double figure scoring game of the season, including his 10th double figure performance in the last 11 games

  • Andrien White made a season-high four 3-pointers, all coming in the first half

  • Chaundee Brown, the Deacs' second leading scorer and rebounder missed his third consecutive game due to a lower leg injury
QUOTABLE
"I thought we came out in the first half and we went scoreless in a few stretches, but we did enough defensively to only be down two," head coach Danny Manning said. "In the second half, we gave their shooters too many looks and they started to get comfortable."
