Release from Wake Media Relations on the addition of a 6-foot-3 player from Italy. The Deacs have been super thin all season. Just the added dept will be a plus.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Head coach Jen Hoover has announced the addition of Elisa Penna to the Wake Forest women’s basketball roster for the 2015-16 season. Penna is immediately eligible and will have freshman status.

“We are excited to announce the mid-year addition of Elisa Penna to our Wake Forest Family,” Hoover said. “Her passion and drive to compete at the highest level was paired with our desire to add someone of her caliber and character to our program. She is a long and versatile player who brings a wealth of international experience and basketball intelligence to the court. Her comprehensive skill-set will allow her to play a variety of positions for us and we expect her to contribute immediately."

Penna joined the team in Miami on Dec. 26 and will be able to play immediately, beginning with the Surfing Santa Classic hosted by FIU.

A native of Bergamo, Italy, Penna graduated from ITC F. Foscari in Venice. She won a bronze medal during the 2014 U20 European Championship with Italy and was named to the All-Tournament team. Penna was also on the silver medal U20 team in 2013 at the European Championship and the bronze medal U16 team at the 2011 European Championship. With Greas Basket Milano club team Penna won four championships. She won the 2009-10 championship on the U15 team, the 2010-11 and 2011-12 championships with the U17 team and the 2012-13 championship with the U19 team. She also won a U19 championship with Reyer Venezia in 2012-13.

Penna is familiar with some of her ACC opponents. She played with Georgia Tech’s Antonia Peresson and Clemson’s Francesca Tagliapietra on Reyer Venezia. Penna also played with Boston College’s Martina Mosetti on the U20 team last summer.
